Miika really did not mind that the blanket itched. It was much better than the thin fabric still wrapped around him under it. He was just happy to not be freezing. It was snowing outside and the sun was so weak today that he almost thought it was evening. The streets were full of people with their heads bowed against the wind and snow. Most did not even look up as the cage was wheeled past them. Some were so deep in their own miserable worlds that they almost got run over. The men moving the wheeled cage refused to stop for anyone.

The gray buildings, gray road and even grayer sky made Miika feel like he was being buried in gray. The cage rattled and shook as he was bumped along the road and the wind pulled at the edges of the blanket. He hoped it wasn’t much farther. Hunter walked along next to the cage, but he seemed to be somewhere else entirely. He did not acknowledge either Miika or any of those traveling with him until the whitewashed walls of the God-King’s Palace came into site.

As soon as they passed through the gates and into the over-sized courtyard, Hunter took the blanket back and ordered Miika to act presentable. Terrified, Miika did as he was told, sitting very still in the freezing cage as he was given away like a piece of property to the most terrifying being he had ever seen.

Hunter and Star waited patiently at the foyer of the Palace. The carriers handed the cage off to some palace lackeys, and Star looked one last time at Hunter before accompanying the palace carriers in charge of Miika.

Miika thought he had disliked living with the Collector, but he was about to find out there were worse places.
